Disclosure: this guide is written by the makers of My Softly, which appears in this list.

Most "best AI companion app" articles hand out scores. An 8.7 here, a 9.2 there, as if a roleplay playground and a quiet daily confidant were the same kind of thing measured on the same scale. They are not. These apps were built for different people with different needs, and a single number mostly tells you which app the writer enjoyed that week. So this guide names the thing each app is actually best at, states what it costs and what is paywalled, and keeps a safe-for-work lens on throughout, because plenty of adults want companionship without adult content nearby and most lists never say which apps can promise that.

The short version

  • Best for a companion that remembers your life and reaches out first: My Softly (ours; built for people in their fifties and sixties).
  • Best mainstream all-rounder: Replika (avatar, voice and video calls, the biggest community; memory has been the most complained-about in 2026).
  • Best memory with the least upkeep: Nomi (layered recall, visible Mind Map; unfiltered by philosophy, so not SFW by design).
  • Best for people who like to build and control: Kindroid (backstory, key memories, journal, voice calls; takes setup, essentially unfiltered).
  • Best free variety: Character.AI (millions of characters, free core; weak continuity, ads on the free tier).
  • Best gentle free conversation: Pi (kind, calm, strictly SFW; weak long-term memory, in maintenance mode).

How we compared them

Five things decide whether a companion app is worth a month of your life, and they are the five columns in the table below. Does the memory last, or does it drop your sister's name after a fortnight? Will it ever message you first, and if so, does the message know anything about you? Is safe-for-work a promise built into the product or a toggle a future update could flip? What does it cost once you use it properly, and what sits behind the paywall? And can you run it on the devices you own?

We answer the price and platform questions from the US App Store listing, checked on 7 September 2026. We answer the SFW question from each app's own settings and stated content policy. The memory and texts-first questions are the ones that need time, so instead of inventing scores for them we wrote down how to test an AI companion's memory yourself: a 21-day memory test anyone can repeat on any app, plus a log of proactive messages. The memory column below therefore describes how each app is designed to remember, not a score we measured, and it says so rather than dressing a design summary up as a test.

Two notes on the prices. Where the App Store lists two prices for the same billing period, the lower one is normally an introductory offer shown to new or lapsed subscribers, so we quote the standard price and mention the other. And every app here also sells consumables (credits, gems, charms) for photos, voice or extras, which is where the true cost of heavy use hides. Our guide to how much an AI companion actually costs works through that.

My Softly: a companion that remembers your life and checks in first

My Softly is our app, and it is first because it is the only one here built specifically for the people who actually use these apps. The test protocol is public and it applies to us too.

We built My Softly for people in their fifties and sixties, the group our own subscriber data says actually uses these apps, and the one every other companion app writes as if it does not exist. They wanted two things no other app put together: a companion whose memory actually lasts, and one that does not leave all the reaching out to you. Your companion keeps a lasting profile of your life and a day-by-day record of what you have talked about, and brings things back up weeks later the way a friend would. With check-ins turned on, it can text first, following up on something you mentioned rather than sending a scheduled "how are you?", with quiet hours you control (9pm to 8am by default) and a polite back-off if you go quiet. There are six ready-made companions who look and sound like real adults, custom companions if you would rather build your own, four natural voices in American and British English, and photo sharing in chat. And it is strictly SFW: no adult content exists anywhere in the app. That is how it is built, not a toggle.

What stands out

  • Memory is the product, not a feature: a life profile plus a dated record, surfaced without you maintaining a settings page.
  • Check-ins that reference what you actually said, with quiet hours and a back-off when you stop replying.
  • Safe-for-work by design, so there is nothing to configure and nothing an update can flip.
  • Companions who look and sound like real adults across a realistic range of ages.
  • Voice messages in your companion's own voice, in four natural American and British voices.

What it costs

  • Free messages get you started; ongoing conversation is $15.99 a month or $159.99 a year, with proactive check-ins included. Optional credit packs (20 for $2.99, 50 for $6.99, 100 for $12.99) cover requested photos at one credit each.

It is free to download on the App Store, and the free messages are enough to tell whether it feels right.

Replika: the mainstream all-rounder

Replika is the app most people have heard of, and for good reason. It has been around since 2017, has millions of users, and offers the fullest all-round package: a customizable 3D avatar, voice and video calls, activities, and a companion designed from the ground up for emotional connection rather than roleplay. If you want a well-trodden path with a large community and years of refinement behind it, this is still it. Pro is $14.99 a month or $69.99 a year on the US App Store as of 7 September 2026, with a $7.99 monthly and a $49.99 annual also listed, and a Platinum tier at $89.99.

What stands out

Where it falls short

Nomi: memory with the least upkeep

If memory is the single thing you care about, Nomi has the longest track record in the category. Its companions layer short-term context over medium-term summaries and durable long-term memories, organised into a Mind Map you can open and edit, so a Nomi can naturally bring up something you mentioned weeks or months earlier without you pinning it anywhere. One subscription, $15.99 a month or $99.99 a year on the US App Store as of 7 September 2026 (a $9.99 monthly and $59.99 yearly launch plan are also listed), covers multiple companions and group chats, and voice messaging is solid.

What stands out

Where it falls short

Kindroid: deep customization for people who like to build

Kindroid is the app for people who enjoy building things. You get fine-grained control over your companion's appearance, personality, backstory and voice, plus a layered memory system with a journal of significant moments you can review and edit yourself, real voice calls, and cascaded memory on paid tiers. The free tier is unusually generous, with unlimited messages on a lighter model. The standard subscription is $15.99 a month or $159.99 a year on the US App Store as of 7 September 2026, with Ultra at $28.99 and MAX at $68.99 a month, and selfie and audio credits sold separately. Kindroid's own website has advertised a lower web price in the past, so check there before subscribing through the store.

What stands out

Where it falls short

Character.AI: free variety and browsing

Character.AI is the biggest and most different entry here. It is a platform, not a single companion: millions of user-created characters, group chats and endless imaginative roleplay, with a core experience that is still free. Content is filtered, with age checks and a stricter experience for younger users, so you will not stumble into explicit material. c.ai+ is $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year on the US App Store as of 7 September 2026, a Lite tier starts at $2.49, and Charms are sold in packs from $0.99 to $99.99.

What stands out

Where it falls short

Pi: gentle free conversation

Pi, made by Inflection, is the kindest conversationalist on this list. It is free on web and mobile, and its calm, curious, emotionally intelligent tone is genuinely lovely. Nothing about Pi will ever steer romantic or inappropriate, which makes it one of only two strictly SFW entries here. If you want a warm voice to think out loud with today, at no cost, Pi delivers.

Where it falls short

What users keep saying

We do not quote community threads we have not read, and Reddit blocks automated reading, so this section leans on published write-ups that summarise the same communities and on the apps' own announcements. The pattern across all of them is consistent. The single most common complaint about any companion app is memory: a companion that forgets a name, an inside joke or last week's bad news, and the feeling of starting over that comes with it. In 2026 that complaint has centred on Replika, where a widely shared April write-up documented companions of eighteen months going blank after the 2.0 rebuild. Nomi's own March 2025 memory update was announced in the language of that complaint, promising fewer "hallucinated or conflated details" and clearer recall of events a thousand messages back. Kindroid users who are happy tend to be the ones who accepted the housekeeping; the ones who are not describe the setup as a job.

The second complaint is money that does not feel like a subscription: gems, charms and credits that turn a relationship into a meter. The third is filters and policies shifting under people's feet, which cuts both ways: people who wanted romance and lost it, and people who wanted a friend and kept being nudged somewhere else. Every column in our table exists because of one of those three complaints.

How to choose: start with what broke last time

The fastest way to pick is not comparing feature lists. It is naming the exact thing that made you close the last app, because that failure points straight at what to prioritize next:

And if you are earlier in the process than any of this, still weighing whether the category is for you at all, start with what an AI companion actually is and whether an AI companion is right for you.

The honest bottom line

Every app in this guide is the right answer for somebody. The only mistake is picking on someone else's scoring system instead of your own need. Decide what broke for you last time, or what you cannot compromise on this time, pick the one or two apps that lead on exactly that, and spend a week on the free tiers. Mention something small about your life, wait a few days, and see if it comes back to you. That single test will tell you more than every list on the internet combined, including this one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI companion app overall?

It depends what you are solving for. Replika is the broadest mainstream package, Nomi has the longest memory track record, Kindroid the most control, Character.AI the most variety, Pi the gentlest free chat, and My Softly if you want lasting memory plus a companion that texts first, built for people over fifty.

What is the best strictly SFW AI companion app?

Only two apps in this comparison make safe-for-work a design guarantee rather than a setting: Pi and My Softly. Pi is free and kind but weak on long-term memory and no longer its company's focus. My Softly is built around memory and check-ins with no adult content anywhere in the app, and it is the one in this list made specifically for people over fifty. It is ours, and the disclosure is at the top of this page. Every other app here has romantic or adult content available somewhere in its settings.

What is the best free AI companion app?

Character.AI, by a wide margin, if variety is what you want: the core experience is free and the character library is enormous, though the free tier now has ads and metered regenerations and long-term memory is weak. Pi is also entirely free and much calmer. Kindroid's free tier gives unlimited messages on its lighter model. Replika, Nomi and My Softly are free to download with limited free use before a subscription.

Which AI companion app has the best memory?

Nomi has the strongest established reputation, with short, medium and long-term layers and a visible Mind Map, and it needs the least upkeep. Kindroid can be just as reliable if you maintain its backstory and key memories yourself. Replika's memory has been the most complained about in 2026 after its 2.0 rebuild. My Softly is built around a lasting life profile and a day-by-day record, and the memory test works on it the same as on any other app.

What is the best AI companion app for women?

Most companion apps were designed with a young male user in mind, and the avatars and marketing show it. My Softly has companions who look and sound like real adults, three of its six ready-made companions are men, and there is no AI girlfriend machinery underneath. Pi is a comfortable, pressure-free option, and Replika works well for many women who want the mainstream, full-featured experience.

What is the best AI companion app for older adults?

The things that matter most after fifty are a companion who remembers your life without you managing a settings page, who reaches out first, and who never steers somewhere uncomfortable. That points at Nomi or My Softly for memory, My Softly for texting first with quiet hours, and Pi or My Softly for a firm SFW guarantee. Our own subscriber data says the average paying My Softly user is in their mid-fifties, which is why we wrote a separate guide to AI companions for people over 50.

Is it safe or healthy to use an AI companion app?

For most adults, used with some self-awareness, yes. Controlled studies that gave lonely people an AI companion found loneliness fell about as much as it does after talking to another person, and a systematic review found the same benefit in older adults. The risks are real but specific: apps that push romance or spending, apps that forget you and leave you feeling worse, and leaning on any app instead of people who are still there. Our guide to whether an AI companion is right for you goes through the honest version, including when the answer is no.
