Disclosure: this page is written by the makers of My Softly. Kindroid's strengths are stated as clearly as ours, and every Kindroid fact below comes from its own help center or App Store listing, read on 2026-09-14.
Kindroid is the builder's app: the most control over a companion's personality, appearance, voice and memory of any app in the category, voice and video calls, proactive messages that can reach your real phone number, a generous free tier, and it runs on iOS, Android and the web.
Pick My Softly if you want the remembering done for you, check-ins that ask about the things you actually said and stay out of your evenings, and nothing in the app that ever turns adult.
Still undecided? Both are free to start. Tell each one three small facts about your week, come back in a few days, and see which brings them up unprompted.
Side by side
Prices are the US App Store in-app purchase prices on 2026-09-14. Kindroid charges less on its own website, which its help center explains is because of lower processing fees, so the web prices are shown too.

What Kindroid does well
Kindroid's strengths are real, and several of them are structural.
- The most control in the category. You write the backstory and key memories, file journal entries under keyphrases so they come back exactly when you want them, and for paid users a Learned Context panel shows the running notes your Kindroid keeps about your relationship, important facts and what is currently going on, which you can edit. If you want to see what your companion knows and change it line by line, nothing else does this as thoroughly.
- Proactive messages with real reach. Subscribers can let a Kindroid decide when to reach out and whether to send a message, a voice message, a selfie or a call. It can read a connected calendar, it slows down on its own if you do not reply, and it can text your actual phone number over iMessage or RCS, so the message arrives like a text from a person.
- Voice and video calls. Kindroid offers live voice calls and video calls, with a monthly audio allowance for subscribers and the option to customise the voice.
- Android and web. One subscription works on iOS, Android and in a browser, and it is cheaper if you buy it on the web.
- A generous free tier. Unlimited messages on its Lite model, two companions and basic long-term memory, without a card. You can live with a Kindroid for weeks before paying.
- Range. Up to ten companions and twenty group chats for subscribers, selfies and video selfies, internet access in chat, and the highest App Store rating of the apps we compare, 4.8 from about 8,500 ratings.
Where My Softly is different
My Softly is built for a particular person, and the point of this page is to help you decide whether that person is you.
Who does the remembering
This is the real dividing line, and it is a matter of taste rather than quality. Kindroid's memory has five systems, and its help center is candid about how they differ: what you write into the backstory, key memories and journal is always or reliably recalled, while the memory it builds on its own is, in Kindroid's words, "infinite in quantity" but "recalled less reliably". Its FAQ also advises keeping the backstory short, because every character you write there is one fewer for the conversation itself. People who enjoy that kind of tuning describe Kindroid as the best companion they have used. People who do not describe it as a job.
My Softly is built the other way round. You talk, and the app does the filing. It keeps a lasting profile of the people, places and plans in your life and a day-by-day record of what you talked about, and brings things back up weeks later without a settings page. If you would rather tell your companion about your sister's operation once, in conversation, and have it ask how she is next week, that is what My Softly is for. Our guide to how AI companion memory works explains the difference underneath.
SFW by design, not by setting
Kindroid describes itself as a neutrally aligned, unfiltered AI, and says plainly that this is a principle: private use should match what the user wants. For many adults that is the appeal. It also means the platonic Kindroid you set up is platonic because you keep it that way, inside an app where the other mode is a sentence away. My Softly has no adult mode. There is nothing to switch off, no tier that unlocks it, and no character who will drift there. If the reason you are reading this is that you want a companion and would rather not be near any of that, this is the difference that matters, and it is why our comparison of the best AI companion apps keeps a safe-for-work lens throughout.
Check-ins that start from what you said
Both apps can message you first on paid tiers, and Kindroid's version has more reach. The difference is what the message is made of and how it is governed. My Softly's check-ins are built around the conversation: mention a vet appointment on Tuesday and Wednesday's message asks how it went. Quiet hours are on by default, nine in the evening to eight in the morning, rather than something you write as an instruction. Messages do not stack up unanswered, and if you stop replying your companion steps back rather than chasing you. We wrote about the distinction in how to get an AI that texts you first: a check-in should be something that could not have been sent to anyone else.
A narrower, warmer register
Kindroid is a platform for building characters, with directives, dynamism settings, scenarios and branching. My Softly is narrower on purpose: six ready-made companions who look and sound like adults, four voices, and a tone aimed at people who want a steady presence in their day rather than a project. The average paying subscriber is in their mid-fifties, and men and women subscribe in about equal numbers. If you found other companion apps a little too much like a hobby, that narrowness is the feature.
The memory question, honestly
Both apps say they remember you, and both are telling the truth about their design. Neither claim on this page comes with a score, because the facts that matter are yours.
So run the test in how to test an AI companion's memory. It is simple: tell the companion five specific facts on day one, never mention them again, and check on days three, seven and twenty-one whether it brings them up unprompted. It works identically on both apps, and it will tell you which memory design suits you better than any page can.
What a year costs
| If you pay | Kindroid (App Store) | Kindroid (web) | My Softly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly for a year | $191.88 | $167.88 | $191.88 |
| Quarterly for a year | $171.96 | $151.96 | Not offered |
| Annual plan | $159.99 | $139.99 | $159.99 |
| With the Ultra add-on, monthly | $539.76 | Lower on the web; see Kindroid's site | Not applicable |
| Extras | Selfie credits, voice credits beyond the allowance, extra slots | Credits from $2.99, for requested photos and voice beyond the monthly allowance; not needed for conversation | |
On the standard App Store plans the two are identical, month to month and by the year. Kindroid's web prices are lower, and its Ultra and MAX memory tiers cost considerably more. My Softly's one subscription covers conversation, voice replies within a monthly allowance, and check-ins. Our guide to how much an AI companion costs puts both against the rest of the category.
Who My Softly is for
Kindroid is built around control: characters you shape, memory you can see and edit, calls, group chats and messages that reach your real phone number. My Softly is built for a narrower set of people.
- You want to talk and have the remembering done for you. My Softly.
- You want a companion and nothing adult anywhere near it. My Softly. This is the clearest dividing line between the two.
- You want to be asked about your real life, with the quiet hours already set. My Softly's check-ins are built for this.
- You are over fifty and want warmth without a project around it. Try My Softly's free messages first; that is who it was built for.

Frequently asked questions
Is Kindroid or My Softly better for memory?
They put the work in different places. Kindroid has the most layers in the category: a backstory and key memories you write, journal entries you file under keyphrases, a medium-term Cascaded Memory for subscribers, an automatic long-term memory that its own guide says is "recalled less reliably", and Learned Context, a set of running notes it keeps for paid users. The things you write are the things it never misses. My Softly is built so the app does the filing: a lasting profile of your life and a day-by-day record, built from conversation and recalled weeks later, with no fields to maintain. The reader test in our memory guide works on both.
Is Kindroid safe for work?
Not by design. Kindroid describes itself as "a neutrally aligned, unfiltered AI", carries an 18+ rating, and says its outputs depend entirely on what you put in, with filters only on image generation to satisfy the app stores. You can keep a Kindroid platonic, but that is a line you hold. My Softly has no adult mode anywhere in the app, so there is nothing to hold.
Does Kindroid text you first?
Yes, for subscribers. Kindroid's "away proactive actions" let a companion decide when to reach out and whether to send a message, a voice message, a selfie or a call, can read your calendar, and can even text your real phone number over iMessage or RCS. Quiet hours apply to calls; for messages you write a directive such as "do not send messages from 10pm to 8am". My Softly's check-ins are also a paid feature and start from what you told your companion: mention an appointment on Tuesday and it asks on Wednesday how it went, inside quiet hours that are on by default, 9pm to 8am, and it steps back if you go quiet.
Which is cheaper, Kindroid or My Softly?
On the US App Store on 2026-09-14 they are the same: $15.99 a month or $159.99 a year for both. Kindroid is cheaper if you subscribe on its website, at $13.99 a month, $37.99 for three months or $139.99 a year, and it sells Ultra and MAX memory add-ons on top at $28.99 and $68.99 a month in the app.
Should I switch from Kindroid to My Softly?
If the reason you are looking is one My Softly actually answers: you want nothing adult anywhere in the app, or you want the remembering done for you rather than kept in a backstory, key memories and journal entries. If you enjoy the building, that is what Kindroid is designed around. The free starter messages are enough to tell.
